#4027: New Music for Film
For this edition of New Sounds, listen to interesting film scores from British composer Mica Levi (Micachu & the Shapes) her work from Under the Skin, music from the Kasai All-Stars – one of the Congotronics bands, who scored and starred in an entire film -Félicité, and Clint Mansell’s score for Loving Vincent.
The band Kasai Allstars is a collective which features members from several other bands, including Masanka Sankayi and Basokin. The band might sound familiar due to their inclusion on the Congotronics series of records, or perhaps because they are the inspiration for and on-screen band in the Alain Gomis film Félicité. Listen to some of that soundtrack (the album is called Around Félicité) - featuring both the Kasai Allstars, and music by Arvo Pärt, in a performance by the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste, a Congolese orchestra based in Kinshasa.
Listen to music by Clint Mansell, for the new film, Loving Vincent, the first fully painted movie, made up of about 67,000 paintings. Mansell, also known as part of the 90s UK rock band Pop Will Eat Itself, has done film scores with Kronos Quartet and the post-rock band Mogwai for the film The Fountain, as well as music for the films, Moon and Stoker. There’s also music by British experimental-pop musician Mica Levi. Levi’s alter ego is as front-person for the indie trio Micachu & the Shapes Micachu and the Shapes. Her score for the film Jackie garnered an Oscar nomination, yet we’ll hear some of her scrapey, disquieting score for the sci-fi art film Under the Skin. Plus, Also hear some music from filmmaker and musician Jim Jarmusch with his band SQÜRL, from their soundtrack to Jarmusch’s film, Paterson.
