#4038: Cross-Cultural Chamber Music
For this New Sounds, listen to chamber music style ensembles with both elements of both east & west. From the New York-based band Sandcatchers, listen to the Arabic oud (lute), wielded by Yoshie Fruchter, together with the Americana hints of lap steel guitar. It’s music from their forthcoming, What We Found along the Way, is something like chamber-jazz, and features cellist Erik Friedlander.
There’s also a combination of Moroccan guembri (3-stringed bass lute) and European instruments such as piano and clarinet in music by Simo Lagnawi, the London-based Gnawa musician. Hear music from Norwegian tuba player and bass trumpeter, Daniel Herskedal, who leads a small ensemble of viola, cello, piano & percussion. On his record, “Roc,” which refers to the mythical bird, listen to a mix of influences from folk, jazz, classical and Arabic music, informed by trips he has made to Syria & Lebanon, and the near east in general. Hear quietly elegant music from Ballaké Sissoko, who plays the traditional kora, a lute-harp from Mali, and Vincent Ségal, the French cellist from their brilliant record, Chamber Music.
Also, listen to music from the Afro-Iranian musician Saeid Shanbehzadeh involving his saxophone and sometimes bagpipes, together with vocalist Rostam Mirlashari, a “Prince of Baluchistan music” exiled in Sweden in 1991. It’s from a record named Pour-Afrigha (“descendant of Africa”), and could be firmly in camp chamber-jazz as well. Plus, listen to music by a Norwegian piano trio, Helge Lien Trio, which draws inspiration from Japan and the fascinating phenomenon of onomatopoeic phrases in that language. From a record called, Guzuguzu – which means “moving slowly,” listen to the piece “Shitoshito” –the phrase to describe “raining quietly.” That, and more.
