#4043: Ever More Electronic Music
Hear classic electronic music from pioneering composer Morton Subnotnick, along with very recent music by Laurel Halo, Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society, & new music from Coupler.
In 1967, the electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick released "Silver Apples of the Moon," the first electronic record (for Buchla synthesizer) ever commissioned by a classical label. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, we’ll listen to the B side of this work.
Then, listen to music from the new record from Chicago-based Coupler, which is led by Ryan Norris of Lambchop, and calls itself “deliberate ambient music.” Using a palette of treated snare drum from Rodrigo Avendaño and Univox synth by Rollum Haas, along with tenor saxophone from Matt Glassmeyer, Norris combines Mellotron, Moog, and Korg synthesizers for an un-ignorable and engaging slowly-evolving journey.
Delia Derbyshire was an English composer and musician who is probably best-known for her electronic music arrangement of Ron Grainer's written theme music to the television series Doctor Who. We’ll hear this theme, along with music by the duo Garry Hughes & Harvey Jones, who operate as Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society. These two modular synth fanatics were both inspired to get into electronic music through the Doctor Who theme and have crafted on their 2017 self-titled release a record without beats or vocals, which clearly captures their love of analog synths, Mellotron sounds and vintage studio effects. Plus, there’s music by Berlin-based American electronic artist Laurel Halo.
