#4070: Updated European Folk Traditions

New Sounds | Feb 4, 2019

For this New Sounds, take a tour of updated European folk traditions from Croatia, Estonia, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Ukraine, and Occitanian music from the south of France, near the border with Spain. Hear the band out of Croatia, Kries, (whose name means “bonfire”) who re-work old folk songs and lyrics with contemporary arrangements. Then, there’s also music from the Estonian folk band, Rüüt, featuring accordions, fiddle, melodica, and vocals. Listen to “hardcore folk” by the Warsaw Village band from Poland, along with mouth music from Ireland.

Then, listen to the Nordic neo-pagan folk band, Wardruna, who also scored the TV series Vikings (See also Encyclopaedia Metallum) They use antler horns, tree trunk drums, and other rare Nordic folk instruments woven together with various field recordings of Norwegian nature sounds to evoke ritual music of Scandinavia in the pre-Christian era. Plus, hear music by Cocanha from Toulouse, in Southern France, who combine girl group harmonies and percussion. That, and more.
