#4080: Music For Duos
Hear music from Senegal and Wales, the duo Ya Tosiba from Azerbaijan and Finland via Berlin, along with music by the late novelist Ursula K. Le Guin.
Continuing their excellent musical partnership, the Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita team up once again on the forthcoming record, “SOAR.” (Due out April 27, 2018 on bendigedig.) The music is a meeting of two bardic traditions, along with two classical harp traditions of Wales and West Africa. In the arrangement they’ve dubbed “Bach to Baisso,” hear a melody excerpted from the Goldberg Variations, which flows into a “baisso,” a tune in the Senegambian kora repertoire for experienced players. Also, hear a mix of Azerbaijani poetry with electronic beats in music by the Berlin-based duo Ya Tosiba. The band is comprised of Zuzu Zaka, who wrote a master's thesis on the traditional poetry genre Meykhana - a spoken word art rather like rap and chanson - and Finnish producer Tatu, who is also known as Scandinavian skweee-pioneer, Mesak.
Listen to the Finnish duo of Tapani Rinne and Teho Majamäki - clarinets and marimba augmented by electronics from an album, Under the Ground recorded in an extension of a subway line outside of Helsinki. There's music from the London-based duo Tomaga, who are percussionist Valentina Magaletti and bass player/electronicist Tom Relleen. Also, listen to music from late novelist Ursula K. Le Guin, and Oregon-based composer, Buchla synthesist, and instrument builder Todd Barton. Hear playable versions of the instruments described in Le Guin’s book, “Always Coming Home” like the seven-foot horn known to the future people of Kesh as the Houmbúta and the Wéosai Medoud Teyahi bone flute.
Hear a mixture of acoustic finger-picked guitars, modular electronics, synthesizers, and field-recordings in music from the Greenpoint, Brookyln-based duo Mountains (Koen Holtkamp and Brendan Anderegg.) Then listen to Duo Jalal - who are violist Kathryn Lockwood and percussionist Yousif Sheronick- in their recording of “Joy” by composer Shirish Korde.
