#4083: New Music From Estonia

New Sounds | Mar 13, 2019

Hear a broad survey of music - folk, jazz, and contemporary classical traditions, along with some electronic music - from the Baltic nation of Estonia for this New Sounds.

There’s music by prominent Estonian composers Veljo Tormis, and Arvo Pärt, along with works by other Estonian musicians who might not be quite as well-known. Hear music from Estonian singer, violinist, electroacoustic composer Maarja Nuut arranged for the Ellerhein Girls Choir, in a song to the sun, “Veere veere paevakene” (roll along, roll dear sun). Then listen to choral music by Veljo Tormis and Tonu Korvitz performed by the Ellerhein Girls Choir, along with a short choral work by Arvo Pärt.

Then, hear a work by guitarist and composer Robert Jürjendal which is informed by electronic soundscapes, prog-rock, ambient jazz and old church music and the fact that there is not much light in Estonia in the winter months. Also, listen to the vocals, vibes, guitar and bass in the folk-chamber-jazz ensemble Verbarium, along with folk-like music with fiddle, guitar, bagpipes, and accordion by Estonian-Flemish quartet Estbel. And more. -Caryn Havlik
