#4094: Playing With Saxes
On this edition of the program we’ll hear works that have two things in common: first, they all feature the sound of the saxophone, or multiple saxes; and second, they all exhibit a sense of play. This doesn’t mean they’re not also serious works.
Miguel Zenon’s “X Marks The Square” is the work of a certified genius (Miguel is a MacArthur Fellow – the so-called “genius award”), full of rhythmic intricacies. Pharoah Sanders is a legendary jazz master who’s career goes back to the '60s, and in his piece “Sunrise” he soars over a rich tapestry of percussion sounds that mimic the natural world awakening at dawn. Syrinx Effect, the duo of Kate Olson and Naomi Siegel, uses electronics that enable them to have some fun with the sounds of their sax and trombone respectively. And then there’s Blue Jazz TV, whose unholy mix of lounge jazz, disco soul, and bachelor-pad exotica they describe as “unlearning music, one note at a time.” They’re all part of this lighthearted edition of New Sounds. - Caryn Havlik
