From the New Sounds Live 2018 Concert Series, Margaret Leng Tan performs a work for prepared piano & toy piano by Kelly Moran & ModernMedieval sings Julianna Barwick and Caleb Burhans.
Recorded at Merkin Hall in April 2018, hear the premiere of new work by Kelly Moran for prepared piano and toy piano, as performed by virtuoso pianist Margaret Leng Tan. According to the program notes, Moran has “made it her mission to devote herself to the prepared piano and create her own signature repertoire on it.” She fully exploits the possibilities of a metallic percussion orchestra on her brand new, “Helix II.” Also, hear Margaret Leng Tan perform a work for toy piano and piano by Toby Twining after Erik Satie, “Satie Blues.”
Also, the vocal supergroup ModernMedieval sings the world premiere of “We Cannot Live” by Caleb Burhans and teams up with composer Julianna Barwick on her work “The Harbinger.” (Burhans is a founding member of Alarm Will Sound, itsnotyouitsme, Signal and the Wordless Music Orchestra and he is also a member of ACME, Newspeak and the disco band Escort.) Plus, hear early music by Hildegard and a piece about love, loss and regret by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and Bang on a Can Co-Founder David Lang, “I Live In Pain.”
