#4138: Sky Music
Hear music that looks to the sky from John Luther Adams, Jane Antonia Cornish, Polish cellist Resina, music from Baird Hersey, and music from Colleen.
Composer John Luther Adams often evokes the world around us – in works about nature - as in his Pulitzer Prize winning piece “Become Ocean” or in the series of Arctic-themed works he wrote while living in Alaska for three decades. For this program, listen to all four of his “Canticles of the Sky” in both choral arrangement and layers of cellos.
Then listen to music by British-born US-based composer Jane Antonia Cornish from her recent record, Constellations, exploring space, time, and the sky. Also, hear sky-watching music from Native American flutist Robert Mirabal and the electric string quartet, ETHEL from their collaborative record, The River. There’s music by the French singer/composer/vocalist/electronic musician Colleen, her “Moonlit Sky,” an older work, for clarinet, harp, accordion, and her voice.
Hear music by Polish cellist and compose Karolina Rec, aka Resina, whose playing suggests certain natural phenomena –the flocking of birds and the movement of water, clouds, light, wind. Also, listen to music from Baird Hersey and the harmonic singing group Prana together with the Toronto-based percussion group Nexus led by Garry Kvistad. From the seven-part suite, “Chiaroscuro” (“light and dark”) by Baird Hersey, listen to “A Vast Expanse of Sky” for human voice and percussion. - by Caryn Havlik
