#4158: Voices Out of Context

Hear music built around pre-existing recordings of voices around the world – voices recorded up to a century ago – brought back in new contexts. There’s music by drummer/producer Jaimeo Brown, Argentine producer Chancha via Circuito, Polaris Prize-winning Canadian composer Jeremy Dutcher, and British composer Jocelyn Pook.

Hear music by Toronto-based composer and operatic tenor who blends his Wolastoq roots with classical techniques. From his 2018 Polaris Prize-winning record, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa – which means 'Our Maliseet Songs' hear a piece called “Mehcinut” featuring the nearly century-old wax cylinder recordings of the Maliseet. The Maliseet are an Algonquian-speaking First Nation of the Wabanaki Confederacy.

Then listen to Connecticut cellist David Darling and his record made with the Wulu Bunun, the indigenous people of Taiwan who live in the central highlands. Listen to their earthy vocal polyphony anchored by layers of David Darling’s cello. There’s also music by New York drummer Jaimeo Brown and his record Work Songs, the second installment in the Jaimeo Brown Transcendence series. Listen to “Safflower” a piece built around samples of old recordings of an Japanese work song that was sung by women in the fields. The safflower produced dye that was only able to be worn by the elite class.

Hear music by Sam Lee and Friends and their arrangements of folk songs from the British travelers community, centering around recordings of Balkan music. Then, listen to the voices of both J. Robert Oppenheimer and traditional Yemenite Jewish chant, coupled with soprano Melanie Poppenheim singing a requiem in Latin from British composer Jocelyn Pook. Plus, hear material from Steve Roach, based on Australian aboriginal music and makes use of the didgeridoo.
