#4159: Ted Hearne's 'Place'

Composer Ted Hearne previews his latest work, Place, a combination of "music, memoir, and mapmaking." Fashioned with American poet Saul Williams, Place is a fiery meditation on gentrification inspired partly by Hearne’s time living in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The score brings together six vocalists and 18 instrumentalists in music that draws from R&B, gospel, indie rock, and everything else, in text that personally addresses privilege, boundaries, immigration, and land in America. Place was co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Barbican Centre and Beth Morrison Projects, and premieres at BAM on Oct. 11-13, 2018.

Also, hear samples of Ted Hearne’s work, including music from The Source, an oratorio based on the story of Chelsea Manning and some of Katrina Ballads, a setting of various texts published in newspapers, along with transcripts of TV interviews from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Plus, there’s music by Missy Mazzoli, as played by violist Nadia Sirota, and more.
