#4174: All in the Harp and Guitar Families
Hear music featuring guitars, harps, and other plucked string instruments from around the world, with works by the Palestinian oud-playing brothers, Le Trio Joubran, Taiwanese pipa player Yufeng Chung, guitarist Meg Baird and harpist Mary Lattimore, Malian kora master Ballake Sissoko with Persian classical percussionists of the Trio Chemirani, and more.
There’s music by Le Trio Joubran, who are three Palestinian brothers, all masters of the Arabic lute, the oud- considered the king of all instruments. Hear “Clay” from their new record The Long March, which also contains a collaboration with former Pink Floyd singer and activist Roger Waters, and poety from legendary Arabic poet Mahmoud Darwish.
Then, listen to the blended acoustic and electronic sounds of guitarist Meg Baird and harpist Mary Lattimore from their new record Ghost Forest, “In Cedars.” Also, sample music from Loscil and Seabuckthorn, aka producer Scott Morgan and guitarist Andy Cartwright, respectively, from their contribution to the Thesis Project series of collaborative recordings.
Hear music from the acoustic folk band, the Alba Griot Ensemble, who blend influences from the Celtic and Mandingue traditions. The band consists of two Scottish guitarists, Mark Mulholland and Craig Ward, the Belgian double bassist Hannes d’Hoine and the Malian n’goni player and percussionist Yacouba Sissoko. Then, hear music by Chung Yufeng, a pipa soloist and classically-trained musician from Taiwan. It’s from her stunning collaborative record, Pendulum, which features works with the Indonesian group Sambasunda, Scandinavian folk fiddles, and traditional Indian classical percussion. The tune we’ll hear is called “7-Beat Flash”, an homage to Mongolian grasslands.
There’s also music from Norwegian guitarist Geir Sundstøl which might also invoke Outer Mongolia, as well as the wide-open spaces of Texas, from the record Brødløs. Rounding out the show is music by Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem, from his recent record, Blue Maqams, which takes makes blue notes of parts of the Arabic scale (maqam).
