#4175: Kate & Yuki, from MusicNOW Festival, 2018

New Sounds | Nov 20, 2018

Dublin-based Irish cellist, Kate Ellis, a member of the Crash Ensemble, and American violinist, now Buffalo, NY-based, Yuki Numata Resnick, performing as Kate and Yuki, offer a six-course musical tasting menu of contemporary music paired with J.S. Bach, recorded at the Music Now festival in Cincinnati.
The annual festival was founded in 2006 by Bryce Dessner, guitarist and songwriter in The National, who serves as the Festival’s Artistic Director. We thank the AC Entertainment folks for the concert audio.

Listen to works performed by both Kate Ellis, and Yuki Numata Resnick, and from their set recorded in April, 2018 at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. In an interview recorded on location, Kate tells of meeting Yuki in a castle to learn music by Bryce Dessner, and putting together a program of works that they could play together.

Hear an arrangement of a J.S. Bach’s French Suite No. 5 (originally for piano), which, in their program “melts” into other works. Listen to Caroline Mallonee’s Crossings, part of “Finger Music,” along with work by Gyorgi Ligeti, and a new work by Irish composer Benedict Schlepper-Connolly whose work draws on the influence of Bach. Plus, hear an arrangement of “Aisling Gheal” by Donnacha Dennehy for cello and electronics, as performed by Kate Ellis.

Also, listen to more music by Bryce Dessner, his "Music for Wood and Strings" in collaboration with both Buke and Gase artist Aron Sanchez and So Percussion.
