#4192: David Bowie Week, Part 5 - Inspirations and Related Works
In this week which marks the anniversary of Bowie’s birth and death, we're celebrating David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy - Low, “Heroes”, and Lodger - with a five-part series of music recorded in October 2018 at Brookfield Place. Each night opened with members of the versatile New York-based Wordless Music Orchestra performing works that Bowie was listening to at the time or that might have influenced his sound world. These "setting the context" works were followed by the all-star cast of musicians led by Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiberg who performed their arrangements of the three records.
For this episode, part 5 of 5, hear some of the bonus tracks that were left off of the original Bowie albums along with the works they inspired by Philip Glass. Listen also to music from the Berlin school of electronic music by keyboardist and composer Klaus Schulze. Hear "Body Love" by Schulze, which is also a soundtrack for the movie directed by Lasse Braun, as played by Wordless Music Orchestra and recorded live at Brookfield Place.
Then, hear music from another Berlin Trilogy – by American composer Philip Glass – who has written symphonies based on all three of the records in Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy. He uses previously unreleased tracks from Low and “Heroes” including “Some Are” and “Abdulmajid.” Listen to these bonus tracks and outtakes along with the movements titled after these songs from Symphony No. 1, “Low” and Symphony No. 4, “Heroes” by Glass. To complete the trilogy, the Symphony No. 12, “Lodger” by Philip Glass, premiered January 10, 2019, with John Adams conducting the LA Phil at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
