#4198: Hidden Voices

New Sounds | Dec 17, 2019

For this New Sounds listen to “hidden voices” – works where there is, or was, a voice as source material, but where the voice is processed and woven into electronics to an extent that it can't really be heard. Listen to a work, "Passages," co-composed by Irene & Linda Buckley for an installation in Cork, in collaboration with artist Ailbhe Ni Bhriain, as part of a citywide festival in 2015. Linda Buckley is an Irish composer and performer based in Glasgow who merges her classical training with the worlds of post punk, folk and ambient electronica, while her sister, Irene Buckley, creates works at the intersection of composition and music technology.

Then listen to music by Paul DeMarinis, based on an Indonesian folk song called, “Beneath the Numbered Sky” which treats the melodies in speech as musical material. Also, hear “Idle Chatter" by Paul Lansky, inspired by the composer's exposure to rap in the 1980's. The work was made by feeding the sounds of human speech into a computer - an IBM mainframe that took up an entire room. - Caryn Havlik
