#4211: New Releases, February 2019

New Sounds | Feb 28, 2019

It’s the most wonderful time of the month – the new releases show! Hear music from Morocco, Slovakia, Norway, New Zealand, London, and Brooklyn.

Listen to Gnawan trance music by Houssam Gania, the Moroccan guembri player and singer, who also happens to be the youngest son to the late Maalem Mahmoud Gania. This particular track features guest musicians on guitar, keyboards, and drums from the Atlantic fishing port city, Essaouira. Then, hear music from Norwegian saxophone player Bendik Giske. Recorded in a mausoleum in Oslo, there is no looping on this creation, rather, he and his producer used contact microphones over the saxophonist’s instrument and body to capture some truly unusual sounds.

Also, listen to music made of plastic by Matmos, including the sound of Lego bricks snapping together, a recycling bin, an exercise ball, a police riot shield, DNA testing kit, and the sounds of plastic horns and plastic drums played by human beings – namely the horn and drumline sections of the Whitefish Highschool Bulldogs from Whitefish, Montana. There’s also music by Alpha Ousmane “Hama” Sankaré, a Malian master who defined the playing style of contemporary calabash percussion, from a new record, Niafunke, also the name of the village in Mali where Ali Farka Toure made a record.

There’s some circle-pit folk music from Slovakia featuring bouzouki, by a group called Banda as well as new music from tuba player, Theon Cross (Sons of Kemet), which combines Afrobeat, grime, and perhaps jazz from his stellar debut, FYAH. Plus, listen to music by Princeton-based composer Gemma Peacocke, who is from New Zealand, from her multimedia song cycle, Waves & Lines, which has set the text of poems from contemporary Afghanistan. And more. - Caryn Havlik
