Hear arrangements of traditional Irish songs by The Gloaming, along with music from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland for a whole program of Northern songs.

Listen to new music from the Irish-American supergroup, The Gloaming, who are fiddle master Martin Hayes, guitarist Dennis Cahill, sean-nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, hardanger innovator Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh and New York pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman). It’s music from their latest record, 3.

Also, listen to music from Finland from Ulla Pirttijärvi & Áššu, based on the traditional Sami Joik. Then, hear Rimur – epic poetry sometimes based on Nordic mythology- from Iceland, along with “old pop songs” from violinist Bjarte Eike and the Norwegian group Barokksolisten, who merrily blend together the sounds of Baroque music, drinking songs from the British Isles, and folk fiddling from various places in Northern Europe.

Hear music for guitar, viola, and nyckelharpa from the Swedish trio Väsen, whose name has many meanings in Swedish: spirit, noise, a living being, an essence. Also, listen to music from the Unthanks, a fluid ever-expanding folk-rooted quintet co-fronted by the two sisters, Rachel and Becky Unthank.

There’s also music from Norway, by Trond Kallevåg Hansen who manages to combine front porch pickin’ music with pedal steel of Geir Sundstøl, violin, double bass and drums into spacious chamber jazz, where “west Norway somehow meets the south Pacific, and humble chapel traditions – of music and much else – rub up against what might be termed Polynesian gospel-swing” (HUBRO Music.)
