#4246: Voices from Around the World

Hear voices from many different parts of the world: Algeria, Tuva, Sudan, Taiwan, Norway, and the Italian island of Sardinia. There’s music from both ends of the Sahara - Algeria and Sudan, as well as from the Sámi people of Scandinavia, along with a stunning collaboration between a Bulgarian womens’ choir and Tuvan throat singers, Huun Huur Tu.

Listen to Norwegian singer Marja Mortensson, who was born into a reindeer herding family and is one of the five hundred fluent speakers of Sámi language. Hear Marja Mortensson perform the traditional singing of the Sámi people -rather like chanting- yoik, along with a drone and groove by tuba player Daniel Herskedal and rhythms from percussionist Jakop Janssønn.

Then listen to music from Argentina, in music by singer, musician, actress and popular educator Miriam Garcia, as remixed by Chancha via Circuito, aka producer Pedro Canale. There’s also music by the Lemma ensemble (created by Souad Asla) from the Saharan southern part of Algeria, which might be close to Gnawan trance, with the vocal style and hand and body percussion.

Plus, listen to a combination of two distinct Central Asian vocal traditions, the Bulgarian Choir Angelite and Huun-Huur-Tu, performing music together based on Bulgarian, Tuvan, and Russian traditions. Also, from another striking vocal tradition, that of male polyphonic singing in Sardinia, listen to music filled with harmonies and overtones from Enzo Favata and Tenores di Bitti.

Then listen to music of Wulu Bunun, the indigenous people of Taiwan who live in the central highlands. Hear their earthy vocal polyphony anchored by layers of David Darling’s cello. Plus traditional Georgian choral music from the Rustavi Choir, and more.
