It’s the most wonderful time of the month. New Releases! Hear music from Central Asia, Scandinavia, Latin America, Appalachia, London, and Brooklyn.
Hear London-based vocal group Shards led by singer, composer and producer Kieran Brunt. Shards combines voices, synths and percussion for their debut record, Find Sound, which John Schaefer likens to the “audio version of beams of light dissolving into a haze.” Also, listen to music sung in Japanese by way of Argentina, Mexico, and North Carolina by acoustic roots music quartet Che Apalache, from their latest record, produced by Béla Fleck.
Listen to brand-new music by Irish fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh on the Hardanger fiddle, & American pianist and producer Thomas Bartlett, both of whom are members of the Gloaming. Improvised music inspired by nature, and that plays out like a thoughtful conversation. Then, Brighton, UK-based pianist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, Helen Anahita Wilson, and award-winning tabla virtuoso Shahbaz Hussain from Pakistan come together on their record, DIWAN, a meeting of east and west rooted in elements of South Asian classical and devotional music and contemporary jazz and western classical music.
Hear a preview of music by classically-trained violinist, electroacoustic music composer, and interactive software engineer, Christopher Tignor. From his new record, A Light Below, coming in October, listen to meticulously constructed and dramatic music, with nearly orchestral-sounding scale, yet all created by Tignor, performed using his own custom software. There’s also music by Icelandic duo Hugar, who use keyboards to combine piano chords, brass and string sounds, guitars, and electronic swells on their latest, Varða, which translates to “cairn” in English.
Plus, hear music by Brooklyn-based, Illinois-born composer Cassie Wieland, and her piece, “Weeds,” inspired by an idea of misplacement – whereby a person or object is taken out of its natural environment. (In the program notes Wieland writes, “A weed is simply something growing where it shouldn’t.”) “Weeds” was commissioned and premiered by the Austin-based group line upon line percussion.
