#4295: Dark, Ambient, and Spooky
Hear creepy atmospheres, alien and/or eerie treatments of the human voice, and music for Satanic summer rituals with music by Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurdsson, Irish sibling composers Irene and Linda Buckley, and dark ambient music by Lustmord. Plus, unsettling music by Jocelyn Pook, Bobby Krlic (aka The Haxan Cloak), and Ben Frost.
Listen to a portion of a new electroacoustic score for the classic silent film, F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu. The Irish sibling composers Irene and Linda Buckley use found sounds from the outdoors, wolves, and the voices of both Buckleys, and viola, cello, and organ to sculpt a creepy epic to accompany the vampire horrors. There’s also dark, moody electroacoustic music by Valgeir Sigurdsson for the Irish new music group Crash Ensemble.
Hear music born of darkness by Welsh industrial musician, sound designer and film score composer Brian Williams, who records as Lustmord (German for “erotic murder.”) Listen to a portion of his work, “Astronomicon,” a dark ambient work made from recordings of deep space and cosmic activity. [“In space, no one can hear you scream.”] Listen also to tense, dark, and atmospheric music by British composer Bobby Krlic (also known by his stage name as The Haxan Cloak) for the film Midsommar.
There’s music by English composer Jocelyn Pook, who takes recordings of Romanian priests chanting, and layers them, backward. Also, hear “Ghost” by David Byrne, from his “Music for the Knee Plays”which contains distant wails from an electric guitar and voices. There’s also mysterious and melancholy from keyboardist, composer and arranger Rob Burger.
Plus, hear some truly terrifying music by composer Ben Frost, where Arctic sounds, natural sounds, animal sounds, and modern medical sounds have been fashioned into his disturbing record, By The Throat.
