#4316: Music for Cello

New Sounds | Dec 17, 2020

Hear music by Icelandic cellist-composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, along with cellist Maya Beiser taking on Bowie's final record. Plus, cellist Ashley Bathgate plays Jacob Cooper, and more.

There’s music for cello, voice, and found sound, and from award-winning Icelandic cellist and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir from her soundtrack for the HBO series, Chernobyl. She captured those field recordings from an actual power plant in Lithuania, including pumps, reactors and turbines, along with some manipulations of her own voice. Also, hear music for cello, strings and electronics from her award-winning score to Joker, based on the comic character of the same name.

Also, listen to music for cello created out of the songs from David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, from cellist Maya Beiser and composer/arranger/conductor Evan Ziporyn. It’s basically a cello concerto, a track by track re-imagining of the Bowie album, arranged and conducted by Ziporyn and recorded with the 30-piece Ambient Orchestra.

Listen to music from a multi-part suite iof cello works, “ASH,” written for cellist Ashley Bathgate (formerly of the Bang on a Can All-Stars.) Hear Bathgate play “Ley Lines” by Jacob Cooper, of the composers collective known as Sleeping Giant.

Then, hear new music from German cellist and composer Anne Müller for “solo cello”, which actually builds up layers of sound, using looping technology. The work is called “Drifting Circles” from her record Heliopause, named after the boundary where the sun's wind ceases to have influence - the border of our solar system. Plus, cellist Matt Haimovitz plays Philip Glass - his Cello Concerto No. 2, “Naqoyqatsi” – named after the Godfrey Reggio silent film for which Glass also wrote the score.
