#4319: Minimalism Meets Jazz

New Sounds | Jan 20, 2021

Hear the juxtaposition of minimalism’s steady rhythm and ever-changing repeating riffs together with the groove of jazz in music ranging from pianist Romain Collin’s trio to bassist Alexis Cuadrado’s Nonet, and as expansive as Numinous, the 20-player group led by Joseph C. Phillips, Jr.

Jazz meets minimalism meets flamenco in music by Spanish-born bassist-composer-bandleader Alexis Cuadrado. Hear his Noneto Iberico play a work called, “Por La Minima (Bulerias).” Then, listen to music by sax player, bandleader, and composer Remy Le Boeuf, which blends interlocking orchestra layers of flute, sax, and percussion motifs.

There’s also a magical work with harp, vibes, guitar, and chamber music instruments by Joseph C. Phillips, Jr. and Numinous -a 20-piece group whose musicians are also members of Asphalt Orchestra, Signal, loadbang, Victoire, and Mivos Quartet.

Hear music from the Romain Collin trio as well as Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society. Plus, listen to a combination of minimalism and jazz in a film score by influential Dutch composer/pianist and teacher Louis Andriessen. And more.
