#4322: Extending the Folk Tradition
Listen to original and traditional songs that come from the British Isles, Scandinavia and America, from Transatlantic band Bonny Light Horseman, Danish musician Myrkur, British folk musician Sam Lee, and Irish traditional music as done by the French-Italian Dublin-based duo Varo. Plus there's music by American guitarist Rafiq Bhatia originally written by British folk singer Ewan MacColl.
Hear music from the supergroup trio of Bonny Light Horseman (named after an old folk song), who are singer and songwriter Anaïs Mitchell with Fruit Bats' Eric D. Johnson and The National and Bob Weir collaborator Josh Kaufman. It’s their tune, “The Roving” based on 500 year old lyrics with an added singalong chorus. Then, listen to new music from the British folk singer, song collector, broadcaster, and activist Sam Lee. Hear both his arrangement of a well-known American spiritual, “Lay This Body Down” / “Oh Graveyard,” and a reworking of “Seeds of Love” which extracts and “distills a new potency” out of the old tunes. These are both from his latest, Old Wow.
Listen to the Dublin-based duo Varo, made up of Lucie Azconaga and Consuelo Breschi (and special guests.) Lucie is from France and she brings the jazz, classical and French folk while Consuelo is from Italy, steeped in folk and world music. Hear their original tune, “Ben Hall's Wake.” Hear fellow Dubliners Lankum, from their recent record, The Livelong Day, and their original tune, “The Young People.” There’s also music from Dublin-based Slow Moving Clouds, who combine Irish and Nordic folk music with post-punk drones, falsetto vocals, and baroque strings using layered string soundscapes of cello, violin and nyckelharpa.
Hear Danish artist Myrkur, and a piece from her forthcoming album – Folkesange - rooted in Scandinavian folk music –which contains both arrangements and her originals. There’s also music by Ewan MacColl – featuring singer Cécile McLorin Salvant - with unsettling sound design from guitarist-composer-bandleader Rafiq Bhatia. Plus, listen to folkified Handel in more music by Slow Moving Clouds, and folked-up Purcell from Norwegian violinist Bjarte Eike with the fiery-fun group Barokksolisten.
