Listen to music from a collection of pieces about different national parks, Dawn Chorus, from the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble, an ensemble dedicated to commissioning and performing new works. This series of commissioned works about the National Parks also included travel to each of the locales that inspired the music with performances by the ensemble on-site. Hear “Bite the Dust” by composer Molly Joyce, dedicated to Badlands National Park.
Then, listen to a piano-based soundscape by multi-instrumentalist and sound designer Ryan Rumery in "Steve Reich mode" (Schaefer) with interlocking layers. Also hear music from two unbelievably talented South African guitarists, Guy Buttery together with Derek Gripper, from a concert they recorded in Cape Town.
From Brooklyn-based composer, musician, and producer David Crowell (of Empyrean Atlas) and his longtime collaborators Sandbox Percussion, listen to recent work for quartet commissioned by the University of Tennessee Percussion Ensemble. Also, there’s new work by Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble with the Bang on a Can All-Stars, in an arrangement of music from her 1983 sci-fi opera The Games. Plus, listen to traditional sounds of North African Gnawa music fused with modern club electronics from an unexpected collaboration between Moroccan Gnawa-master (maâlem) Rabii Harnoune and Frankfurt electronic producer V.B.Kühl.
