Inspired by the name of a 1984 Penguin Cafe Orchestra record, Broadcasting From Home, hear an hour of music recorded at home, or with household objects for this New Sounds. Listen to dreamy instrumental fingerstyle guitar from Senegal by Tidiane Thiam, along with music by Argentine singer and producer Juana Molina. Also, listen to work by Russian sound sculptor Kate NV, and pianos recorded in a home with the windows open by Benny Gebert.
Hear music by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, led by the late Simon Jeffes, from their 1984 record, Broadcasting From Home. The music combines elements of folk, classical, pop, minimalism, Cajun twang and swing, and anything else they want to play - with special emphasis on the joy in playing. Then, hear a piece by Russian synth futurist and sound sculptor Kate Shilonosova, aka Kate NV, along with experimental pop by Argentine singer, guitarist, electronic music producer, & actress Juana Molina.
Listen also to dreamy instrumental acoustic guitar from photographer, visual artist, and folklorist Tidiane Thiam who is from Podor, a small riverside town in the far North of Senegal. Thiam is a self-taught musician who learned fingerstyle guitar from late-night radio broadcasts, and his forthcoming record is due in May 2020 on Sahel Sounds. Also, hear Malian kora player Ballaké Sissoko and French cellist Vincent Ségal, recorded on a Bamako rooftop, from the stunning record Musique de Nuit.
There’s piano music by Benny Gebert (of pop group HAERTS), recorded in an upstate New York farmhouse with opened doors and windows. Then, listen to music from inside the home by electronic music pioneer Paul Lansky, sampled from the acoustic sounds of a table being cleared. And more.
