#4359, Music of Trees

New Sounds | Jun 18, 2022

Hear music around the idea that trees can communicate…in both folklore and science and music that uses trees as a metaphor, and songs where trees are taken quite literally. Listen to works by Berlin producer Pantha Du Prince, drummer Susie Ibarra, and music from the Palestinian oud-playing brothers of Trio Joubran.

Inspired by the way that trees communicate underground through their network of roots, hear the latest from Berlin producer and electronic musician Pantha Du Prince, from the record, Conference of Trees. Also, listen to music by drummer/composer Susie Ibarra for Ethos Percussion Ensemble which might first be driven by heartbeat-like rhythms. Those give way to a sandy stillness created by brushwork. The work is called “These Trees That Speak.” Then, there’s music for kora by Gambian-born now Danish-based musician and composer from a griot family, Dawda Jobarteh.

Then, listen to a work by “American Primitive” guitarist and drone musician from Fredericksburg, Virginia, Daniel Bachman, that combines acoustic and electronic sounds, which some have described as “Appalachian psychedelia” with its fingerstyle guitar music plus shadowy effects. Also, hear the Arab lutes of Trio Joubran, the three Palestinian oud-playing brothers, from their record, The Long March. Plus, listen to music of trees from Galway-raised troubadour Adrian Crowley and singer, songwriter, and radio host, David Garland.
