#4361, New Releases, April 2020

Clarice Jensen with cello and pedal board

It's that time of the month again for the new releases show on New Sounds. Listen to some music made in the special circumstances of COVID quarantine, as well as music that was made in the before times.

Listen to new music from Brooklyn-based cellist Clarice Jensen, her first album for the FatCat 130701 imprint  The experience of repetition as death.  The album’s title is taken from a line in a 1971 poem by the influential American radical feminist poet Adrienne Rich called ‘A Valediction Forbidding Mourning’ – a response to a John Donne poem of the same title from 1611. Written and performed by Clarice alone, all of the sounds on it were created with a cello through a variety of effects and effects pedals. “I hope this album, in its repetition, might provide the listener with a respite from - or a reflection upon - the malaise and / or comfort of life’s repetition,” she writes.

Then, from the waaaay before times is music by composer/trumpeter Jon Hassell and Brian Eno, from his Fourth World style of Possible Musics - where music of other cultures of the world meet advanced electronic techniques for a primitive/futuristic sound. This music from 1980 is not new, but Hassell, now 83, has long-term health issues and his collaborator Brian Eno posted at this GoFundMe started by his friends and family to help.

Listen to new music from Dinosaur, the London-based band led by trumpeter Laura Jurd, along with new music by producer Aukai. There’s also new music by Grammy-nominated clarinetist David Krakauer and South African composer/pianist Kathleen Tagg. Hear their arrangement of a tune by John Zorn, from his Book of Angels collection of works. Then there’s new music by the London-based iyatraQuartet, where 'iyatra' derives from the Hindi word for travel or pilgrimage.

Hear music made in these isolated times by New York saxophonist Steve Lehman - recorded as practice sessions in his car, as that was the best recording booth he could find while he and his family sheltered in place. The tunes were then compiled on an EP and given to his mom, Sheila Lehman, on her 80th birthday (April 25, 2020.)There’s also music by Sarathy Korwar from London, where he sent around a reference track and instructions to his band members. Those recorded results were mixed down and the initial reference track was then removed for “Stayin’ Alone,” released on his Soundcloud. Listen also to music from Norwegian accordionist Frode Haltli and his band, Avant Folk, which came together much like a quilt, with band members adding to the whole as each recorded a part and passed on the tune to the next. Hear the results as “Quarantine Quilt.”
