#4368, Musical Crossings
Listen to musical crossings -of traditions, languages, eras, and styles- from the Garifuna people of Central America, from Cocanha of southern France, and the globe-spanning collaboration of Constantinople and Ablaye Cissoko.
From Ablaye Cissoko & Constantinople Ensemble, hear Traversées, a Canadian-Senegalese-Iranian collaboration with kora, setar (Persian lute), percussion, and viola da gamba. Constantinople is a Montreal-based early music and middle eastern music ensemble while Cissoko, a griot from Saint-Louis, Senegal, is a master of the kora, the 21-string bridge-harp of the ancient Manding Kingdom (13th century.)
Hear music by songwriter, singer, and guitarist Aurelio from Central America's Afro-Amerindian community, the Garifuna. The Garifuna people of the Caribbean coast of Central America are the descendants of people from West Africa who were to be enslaved in the West Indies. However, the two Spanish ships were shipwrecked in 1635, and never made it to their destination. These West Africans stayed among the indigenous Amerindian group, the Carib people, on the island and together created the Garifuna people. Then, hear music by the Toulouse-based Occitan trio Cocanha, whose vocal harmonies are often accompanied by body percussion (hands and feet), and sometimes the drone of Pyrenean string tambourine.
Also, from Central American, there’s music by Doctor Nativo, a “Guatemayan” musician (who is both from Guatemala and honors Mayan culture), featuring Mayan-language rapper Tzutu Kan. There’s music by Brussels/Paris-based band Lolomis, and their Balkan- and Roma-influenced renaissance dance music. Then listen to a music by the Turkish singer/songwriter Gaye Su Akyol in a cinematic, sensuous tune where Anatolian melody meets Western electric guitars. Also, hear electro-acoustic music featuring oud from Karavan Sarai, steeped in the hypnotic ethnic melodies of the Silk Road regions of India, Persia, Turkey, Balkans and Arabia. Plus, music from Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, and more.
