#4369, In This Garden

New Sounds | Jul 9, 2021

Listen to ostensibly garden-themed works, with several settings of William Blake poetry, Sam Lee's folk-song reworking, and beauty and dread by trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire.

Hear a work by trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire from his record, Origami Harvest, featuring an unusual combination of instruments – rapper Kool A.D. (Das Racist), the daring new music strings of Mivos Quartet and pianist Sam Harris, drummer Marcus Gilmore, and saxophonist Walter Smith III. Listen to “Americana/the garden waits for you to match her wilderness,” a ten-minute journey through the paradoxes of living in America as a black father. (Shadowproof.) The record was commissioned by the Liquid Music Series and the Ecstatic Music Festival.

Listen to an experimental big band jazz version setting of William Blake’s "Garden of Love” and featuring Theo Bleckmann. Then, listen to a second setting of Blake by Dutch composer Jacob TV, featuring Italian sax player and composer Laura Venditti, from her record, ElecctroSax. Also, there’s music by song collector Sam Lee from the UK, and his setting of the traditional “Seeds of Love,” but he’s called it “Garden of England.”

Hear brand-new Appalachian blues and a folky mountain take on Romantic 18th century English poetry as Martha Redbone sets William Blake’s “The Garden of Love.”  Also, listen to music – garden-themed- from a collaborative song cycle from the record, When We Are Inhuman, from composer and guitarist Bryce Dessner, together with Will Oldham, aka Bonnie Prince Billy, and the Chicago-based new music band, eighth blackbird.

Plus, music from English composer and singer, Donna McKeviitt and a former member of a goth-chamber vocal ensemble Miranda Sex Garden. Hear “I Walk in this Garden” from her song cycle, Translucence, intimate settings of poetry by the late Derek Jarman, the provocative filmmaker, artist, and gardener.
