#4382, Celebrating Birdsong
Get back to nature with a program celebrating the sound of birdsongs. Hear works that incorporate actual recordings of birdsong or do their best to imitate. Listen to music from David Rothenberg, Jocelyn Pook, and John Luther Adams, along with new music by Monte, aka Simón Mejía, founder and leader of Bomba Estéreo.
Hear music inspired by birdsong, whether it’s by composers who are birders, or naturalists. Listen to bird sounds of South America collected from along the Magdalena River in Colombia, by Simón Mejía, founder and co-leader of Bomba Estéreo. His new project, called Monte is built on the sounds of these field recordings which will be released in August as a record called Mirla. The title track, "Mirla" was composed out of reverence to a songbird that frequented Mejía's terrace just outside of Bogota.
Listen also to music by Gabriella Smith, which uses the recordings of birdsongs (the dawn chorus of from a small town in Southern Chile) with her own imaginary birdsongs chirped by the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Then hear John Luther Adams’ recording “Songbirdsongs,” where an ocarina imitates the birdsong, and recent music by clarinetist and naturalist David Rothenberg. Also, hear music by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara and his 'concerto for birds and orchestra', as it's subtitled, which uses recorded birdsong throughout.
There’s also music by the Norwegian composer Rolf Wallin, his “Das war schön!” (That was nice!) whose title refers to Mozart’s reaction to his caged bird being able to sing the main theme of the final movement of his 17th piano concerto, although with two small mistakes. Plus, music for Earth Day by English composer Jocelyn Pook, and more.
