#4383: New Music For Guitar
Sample from a passel of inventive recordings for guitar, and the interesting ways that one can extend its possibilities. Listen to music by Virginia-based guitarist Yasmin Williams, whose approach is perhaps percussive at times, up to and including her own feet in tap shoes on a board, adding accompaniment. She plays fingerstyle, sometimes with the guitar in her lap, and sometimes together with kalimba, and has been studying kora as of late. Her latest record, Urban Driftwood, is out now via Spinster Sounds.
Then, hear work by Asheville, NC-based guitarist Sarah Louise, from her album of improvisations on electric guitar, which were then processed and edited into gorgeous soundscapes. Hear the title track, Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars. Listen to new meditative music from guitarist-singer-songwriter Buck Curran, who is one half of the alt-folk duo Arborea, as well as some music by Brooklyn-based guitarist Kaki King from her multi-media work, The Neck is a Bridge to the Body. Talk about extending the guitar, for this large-scale work, her custom-made instrument also serves as a projection screen.
Then, from Belgian guitarist Jonas Meersmans, and a compilation from the Imaginational Anthem series of guitar music collections, hear his piece “The Turnaround” as well as a work from Mouss, a guitar player from the Western part of France. This collection, titled Overseas Edition, contains music by many musicians on the other side of the ocean who were inspired by John Fahey and American primitivism in one way or another.
There’s new collaborative work by the duo of New York-based guitarist-composer John King and the guitarist Sergio Sorrentino, based in Italy. Plus, hear music from the Italian guitarist and innovator Pino Forastiere on his “laboratory guitar.” This Lab Guitar is a former Eko Chetro steel string guitar from the early ’80s, converted into a sixteen-string instrument.
