It’s the most wonderful time of the month! Listen to some of the freshest new music that made its way into our earholes via the interwebs. Hear music from South African cellist Abel Selaocoe, Icelandic duo Hugar, and music for extreme dog grooming by Dan Deacon. Also, sample from Nubya Garcia’s debut record, Source, and guitar music by Irish composer Dave Flynn.
Listen to one of the sound journeys by South African cellist and composer Abel Selaocoe for the BBC Arts and Arts Council England’s Culture in Quarantine programme. Created specifically to be listened to on headphones whilst walking, Selaocoe’s work is titled “Ulibambe” which comes from a Zulu saying meaning ‘Hold the sun, so it may not set.’ The work contains a poem as well, Duende’s Nature Dance (for Abel Selaocoe) by Eugene Skeef.
Then, hear music from Icelandic keyboard duo Hugar and their soundtrack for a film about the video artists Steina Vasulka and Woody Vasulka (who also founded the performance venue, The Kitchen.) Also, listen to a small portion of Dan Deacon’s score for an HBO film about Extreme Dog Grooming, Well-Groomed. There’s music from London sax player and bandleader Nubya Garcia with the the all-female Colombian percussion and vocal group La Perla, who heeds the call of the cumbia, from her new record, Source.
Also, sample music for resophonic guitar by Dominique Vaccaro, who uses the stage name J.H. Guraj in homage to an old sage picker from the Albanian rocky landscape. Listen to new music from Irish composer Dave Flynn inspired by Dún Laoghaire Harbour along with acoustic guitars from Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon (Phish), and more. -Caryn Havlik
