#4405, Drone-Folk
The focus is on the implied drones of folk music in tunes by French quartet Super Parquet and Irish quartet Lankum, along with doom folk by Cinder Well, and electroacoustic folk by Tunng for this show. Listen to the dark twang and drones in music by French quartet Super Parquet, who combine bagpipes called cabrette, from the Auvergne region of France, and banjo, along with many kinds of drones and electronics. There’s also work by the French electric folk group founded in 1973, Malicorne, with explicit layers of drone, both tape loops and vocal arrangements.
Then listen to “doom folk” by Irish-based songwriter Amelia Baker, who records as Cinder Well. Her work is informed by traditional forms and tunes of County Clare, even as she adds haunting and meditative soundscapes. There’s also music from Dublin-based duo Varo, made up of Lucie Azconaga from France and Consuelo Breschi from Italy. Hear their original tune, “Ben Hall's Wake.” Listen to immersive drone-folk by fellow Dubliners Lankum, who incorporate darkness and drone in their reworked traditional folk songs.
Plus, music by U.K. experimental folk band Tunng – who may be forever linked to the subgenre known as “folktronica,” music by Vermont-born, London-based folk singer Sam Amidon, and work by British-Indian singer Sheila Chandra, who blends elements of Irish, Islamic, and English folk traditions in "Lagan Love" from drones to ragas. - Caryn Havlik
