#4408: With or Without Electronics: Piano Edition

New Sounds | Sep 16, 2020

Hear works for piano by Philip Glass, as played by Simone Dinnerstein and recorded at her home during the pandemic, and pieces that involve piano with electronics by Irish composer Linda Buckley, London-based Theo Alexander, and Icelandic duo Hugar.

From a brand new album, sample music from Dinnerstein’s recording made at home during lockdown, on her own piano, of Philip Glass Etudes No. 16, No. 6, and No. 2. (Etude No. 6 was originally an instrumental response to the poem “No Longer Very Clear” by John Ashbery commissioned by WNYC for the 50th Anniversary of our FM station in 1994.)

Then, listen to spiky piano and electronics by London-based pianist Theo Alexander, from an album called Animadversions. Hear another work for piano and electronics, this time by Irish composer Linda Buckley “Fridur,” which means “peace” in Icelandic. The work premiered in Belfast in late 2015, and features pianist Isabelle O'Connell. Also, there’s music from Icelandic keyboard duo Hugar and their 2020 soundtrack for a film about the video artists Steina Vasulka and Woody Vasulka (who also founded the performance venue, The Kitchen.) - Caryn Havlik
