#4411, Alt-Latinx Music from South America
Hear "Alt-Latinx Music" works combining old and new, where traditional folkloric music and environmental sounds of South America come together with electronics, in music by Monte, Chancha via Circuito, and La Yegros.
Sample from the 2020 record Mirla by Monte, aka Simón Mejía of Colombian dance band Bomba Estéreo, which marries field recordings of bird songs and indigenous peoples collected from the environment along the Magdalena River to guitar, synths, and beats, augmented by electronics. Then, from Argentina, listen to music by Chancha via Circuito, the alter ego of producer Pedro Canale, who enjoys chopping up and then mixing folk guitar, flutes, and Coke-bottle percussion to make retrofitted cumbia for the clubs. Also from Argentina, hear music of “electro-folk alchemist” and producer Lagartijeando (real name Mati Zundel) from his record, Jallalla.
There’s still more music from Argentina by singer, rapper, songwriter, and recording artist, La Yegros, widely regarded by the Latin American and European club press as "The First Lady of Electro Cumbia.” Plus, listen to music by Argentine songwriter and guitarist Federico Aubele who is just as likely to channel tango master Astor Piazzolla as he is Thievery Corporation.
