Sample music by EYOT, Serbian instrumental-rock-jazzers who write in "odd" time signatures, and create a potent blend of punk and ambient, impressionism to romanticism. Here’s the title track from their 2020 record called 557799, after some of the odd rhythms - fives, sevens, nines - that drive Balkan traditional music. Then listen for the cinematic Arabic classical music influence in a song by the Oxford band Brickwork Lizards, “Hijaz Mandira,” named for the Arabic scale, hijaz. Also, hear a tune in sevens by Trio Tekke from Greece who draw on rembetika, the so-called “Greek blues.”
Listen to “7-Beat Flash” by Taiwanese pipa player Yufeng Chung that incorporates Indonesian gamelan, western violin, and electric guitar, and was conceived of as an homage to Mongolian grasslands. It’s centered on the pipa, the Chinese lute, incorporates the group Sambasunda, and features violinist Yadi Cahyadi. And there’s music from New Orleans-based band Blato Zlato, whose specialty is Bulgarian and Balkan songs. The title translates to “The Water Flows” and calls forth a conversation on the reality of climate change, and is in, ah – ah – ah! – sevens! Then, listen to the east coast-based jazz band Wing Walker Orchestra and movement from their “Hazel Suite,” named for a character in a Star Wars-influenced graphic novel. Plus, music for sitar and tabla by Neel Murgai, Co-Artistic Director of Brooklyn Raga Massive in a seven-beat cycle. And more! - Caryn Havlik
