Hear new music that celebrates female voices by Magos Herrera and Paola Prestini from their new record, 'Con Alma,' as well as music by Harold Budd, who has died, at age 84.
Listen to the new collaborative album by Mexican singer Magos Herrera and the New York-based composer Paola Prestini called Con Alma – “With Soul.” Herrera is a jazz singer who’s done a whole album with the string quartet Brooklyn Rider, and Prestini is Artistic Director at National Sawdust, a venue that refuses to abide by stylistic boundaries. So, expect a broad-minded palette of sounds that ranges from jazz to chamber music, and Latin song. John Schaefer said most of this first, (and best) as he previewed the online event for the record, which will be broadcast this Sunday, Dec. 13.
Additionally, this collection of original works “explores the question of how we can find communion in a time of isolation” (National Sawdust.) Among the many musicians who recorded in isolation from all over the world are the all-women Leipzig based Ensemble Sjaella, the Young People’s Chorus of NYC, Constellation Chor featuring Marisa Michelson, and Mexico’s top symphony orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería; as well as many talented instrumentalists. Hear selections from the record featuring female voices in originals by both Herrera and Prestini.
There’s also ambient, meditative music by influential composer and collaborator, Harold Budd, who has died, at age 84. Listen to some of his music from the 1970s, centered on female voices and featuring the harp, from his 1978 record Pavilion of Dreams. The keyboardist, composer, collaborator also worked with Brian Eno and Cocteau Twin’s Robin Guthrie. Hear selections from the just-released collaboration with Guthie (recorded in 2013), called Another Flower. - Caryn Havlik
