My Brother's Keeper

We begin the evening with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: his Concerto for Orchestra in D, Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, is followed by his Keyboard Sonata in c, scintillatingly performed by pianist Mikhail Pletnev. Then Haydn (the usual suspect, Franz Joseph, that model of quartet composers) contributes his Opus 77 String Quartet in G to the proceedings; toward the end of the evening we hear from his brother, J. Michael, whose exotically 'Turkish' Incidental Music to Voltaire's "Zaire" is presented by Johannes Goritzki and the German Chamber Academy Neuss. Speaking of the exotic, Alan Hovhaness's symphony, "Mysterious Mountain," and his Sonata for Harp fill out the evening.
