Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Samuel Barber was born this day in 1910. To celebrate, we bring you Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony playing his "Essay for Orchestra," as well as the Emerson's sterling rendition of his String Quartet. Since March is Women's History Month, we focus on two prestigious French female composers, as we play Lili Boulanger's Theme and Variations for piano and Germaine Tailleferre's "Petite Suite." Merveilleux!! The Pittsburgh Symphony will be at Carnegie Hall on March 16th and 17th, so we highlight that august group in a performance of Leonardo Balada's "Steel Symphony," a multi-rhythmic impression of the city's steel mills. Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll," Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2, and David Amram's Violin Concerto offer more listening pleasure.
