Swan Deconstructed

After Jean Sibelius's "Swan of Tuonela" is performed by the Pittsburgh SO under Lorin Maazel, we hear this famous warhorse deconstructed in Ingram Marshall's "Dark Waters," a work utilizing sampling from an old 78-rpm recording of the Sibelius. Earlier in the evening, we celebrate Henry Cowell's birth date (3/11/1897) by playing the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra's rendition of his appealing Concerto grosso and pianist Alan Feinberg's take on his "Aeolian Harp." Gunter Wand and the Cologne Radio SO give us Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 3, before we move on to Aaron Jay Kernis's 20th-century Partita, a solo guitar work based on Baroque forms and written for his friend David Tanenbaum, who plays the work for us this evening.
