Three for Two!

Mozart wrote his Concerto for Three Pianos, K 242, for the countess Antonia Lodron and her two daughters. Commonly known as the "Lodron" in honor of its dedicatees, the original work makes no great intellectual or virtuosic demands. But that can't be said so easily for his two-piano version, which naturally makes greater demands! It is performed this evening with panache by Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu with the English Chamber Orchestra. Far more fragrant are Falla’s "Nights in the Gardens of Spain," evoked by his compatriot, Alicia De Larrocha, her legendary fingers casting their luscious spell on our dreaming ears. Then it's back to "pure" music with Vaughan Williams's Piano Quintet, as perfectly played by the Nash Ensemble.
