Color it Midnight Blue

After we hear Martha Argerich perform the honors in Haydn's Piano Concerto in D, we'll hear "The Birds" calling to us in Respighi's depiction of a dove, a hen, a nightingale, and a cuckoo—all derived from avian portrayals by Baroque composers—performed by Joel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony. A little later, we hear another hen, as Sigiswald Kiujken leads the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in Haydn's Symphony No. 83, nicknamed in honor of that barnyard fowl. On March 24, at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, our very own John Schaefer chairs an exploration of the relationship between folk, popular, and classical music by three Grammy Award-winning instrumental masters: Edgar Meyer, Sam Bush, and Jerry Douglas. Tonight's Evening Music features Edgar Meyer's Concerto for Cello and Double Bass, with Meyer himself on bass, Yo-Yo Ma on cello.
