Hear the newest sounds from January with music from New York percussionist and educator Michael Wimberly, Montreal’s Bell Orchestre, New York vibraphonist Patricia Brennan, and London-based experimental duo Tomaga.
Listen to new work by percussionist, composer, collaborator and professor Michael Wimberly from his new record, Afrofuturism. The album reaches far beyond his jazz roots, embracing ‘the total music vision coined by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, “ancient to the future”’ (from the liner notes by Peter Margasak.)
Then, hear a preview of the forthcoming release from Montreal’s Bell Orchestre, a chamber group founded by bass player Richard Reed Parry of Arcade FIre. Recorded in all of the rooms in Sarah Neufeld’s rural house (pedal steel in the bathroom, drums in the attic, and so forth), each member was isolated, but improvised and then those takes were brought together with structure for a record called inevitably, House Music.
There’s also new music from Mexican born, New York-based vibraphonist, marimbist, improviser and composer Patricia Brennan, a collaborative record from So Percussion and Buke and Gase, and electroacoustic chamber music by Bob Boilen (the NPR host and owner of the “Tiny Desk.”) Plus, listen to some of the last work from the London-based experimental duo Tomaga, accomplished just before Tom Relleen’s passing in August 2020.) - Caryn Havlik
