Dedication to PEACE

Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Renowned film composer Richard Rodney Bennett is sixty-seven years young today, so we're toasting him by airing his Clarinet Quintet and the two-piano "Four Piece Suite." Joanne Polk, noted for her project to record all of American composer Amy Beach's piano music, gives us Beach's expansive and passionate Piano Concerto. Horn enthusiasts are in for two treats: Hermann Baumann’s playing of a natural horn in Mozart's E-flat Horn Concerto; and Soren Hermansson, along with harpist Erica Goodman, playing Amsterdam-born Jan Koetsier's Sonata for Horn and Harp, the only sonata written for this combo to date. Gloria Coates, who divides her time between New York and Munich, dedicated her Seventh Symphony to "those who brought down the Wall in PEACE." Despite these words, sympathetic to non-violent movements for political liberation, Coates say this work is non-programmatic, aiming at being nothing other than music.
