Blue Cathedral

Pianist Alain Kremski writes that the mystical simplicity of the music of George Gurdjieff (as realized by Thomas de Hartmann) "has the undeniable power of restoring us to ourselves." More meditation: in Jennifer Higdon's "blue cathedral," a memorial to her recently deceased brother, we hear a flute (her instrument) and a clarinet (his) in dialogue, as she muses musically on the vicissitudes of life and time. Highlights from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" are vividly portrayed by Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony. Maurizio Pollini turns in a bravura performance of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, with Karl Bohm conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. The brilliant film composer Eleni Karaindrou created a compelling score for Theo Angelopoulos's film "Ulysses' Gaze." Violist Kim Kashkashian is the featured performer.
