The Sound of the Flute

Flutes figure prominently as we begin this evening: the group Mobius enchants us with Jean Francaix's Quintet for Flute, String Trio, and Harp; and the Catalan Baroque composer Joan Baptista Pla's B-flat Concerto, originally written for oboe, beguiles us in a performance on flute by Jean-Pierre Rampal. After enjoying Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds in E-flat, we will be blown away by Brahms's Symphony No. 1, with Klaus Tennstedt at the helm of the London Philharmonic. But there’s more! John Blow's setting of John Dryden's "Ode on the Death of Mr. Henry Purcell" is his elegy to his former, beloved pupil. Sally Beamish's "No, I'm not afraid" is a musical response to six poems written by Ukrainian Irina Ratushinskaya while she was in prison "for anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda"; the words are spoken, not sung.
