Happy Birthday, Igor Stravinsky!
Evening Music | May 6, 2010
It’s Stravinsky’s birthday, so we’re presenting his “Rite of Spring,” some piano excerpts from “L’histoire du soldat,” and the Duo concertant. Great music from a great composer.
An appropriate opening to this evening’s music is Vaughan Williams’s “Serenade to Music.” A bit later, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio will bring us Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 28. Igor Stravinsky was born this day in 1882. To celebrate, we’ll hear Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony performing “Le sacre du printemps,” pianist Christopher O’Riley playing excerpts from “L’histoire du soldat,” and violinist Jasper Wood and pianist David Riley in the Duo concertant. Beethoven’s Octet for Winds will be followed by “In Whims of the Wind,” A Lydia Kavina work featuring the eerie theremin, voice, and piano. Towards the end of our musical evening, we’ll bring you a historical recording from December 1938 of Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No. 1, played by that monumental legend of the harpsichord, Wanda Landowska.
