Tonight we celebrate the Summer Solstice. From Gershwin’s “Summertime” to Prokofiev’s “Summer Day,” we’ll get you in a summer state of mind with beautiful seasonal music from around the world.
It's the first day of Summer, and what better way to start our evening than with the second movement of Antonio Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" (Summer, of course). Renée Fleming and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra perform George Gershwin’s “Summertime” as we embark on a musical mini-tour of summer themes from around the world. Join us for a “Summer Day in the Mountains” (Eugene Bozza), or a “Summer Night on the River” (Frederick Delius). Spend some time in “Summerland” (William Grant Still), or make it a “Summer in Buenos Aires” (Astor Piazzolla). Get in the mood for a nice “Summer Evening” (Delius, Kodaly and Grieg) as the sun finally sets on the longest day of the year.
