Guitar lovers rejoice! Tune up your strings and grab your picks as we strum our way through a Guitar-filled whirlwind tour of Spain (with bonus stopovers in Germany and Austria). Don’t fret; we’ll have you back safe and sound by nightfall.
From the Lute to the Rickenbacker, it’s one of the oldest and most popular instruments of all time. We’re talking about the Guitar, of course, which is featured prominently in tonight’s show. We start off the evening with several works by Gaspar Sanz. Baroque specialist Rolf Lislevand brings the 17th century Spanish style and flavor to life with virtuoso performances on the Theorbo and Baroque Guitar. After that we’ll hear one of the most popular Guitar concertos ever, Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez,” in a spicy rendition from Manuel Barrueco with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Placido Domingo conducting. Then it’s off to Germany and Austria with works by Schubert and Haydn from that master of guitarists, Andres Segovia. It’s a night for Guitars all around!
