#4476, Music From Documentaries

New Sounds | Mar 25, 2021

Listen to music from documentary film scores - biographical films Hemingway or Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am along with music by the South African Avant-Jazz collective SPAZA, and their work for a documentary about the tumult in 1976 during South Africa’s struggle against apartheid.

Listen to the original score of the film UPRIZE!, by the South African Avant-Jazz collective SPAZA ('Spaza' is a word for an informal neighborhood store in South Africa, according to the label, Mushroom Hour Half Hour.) The music was recorded during three days of an improvised scoring workshop, while the film was still being put together. “Only snatches of footage and audio were available to the musicians via a projection on the wall of the living room in which they were recording, to which they would respond with improvised performances”. The musicians involved this time - bassist Ariel Zamonsky, percussionist Gontse Makhene, pianist, trombone player and singer Malcolm Jiyane, as well as vocalist Nonku Phiri- were “intentionally steered” by musical directors Nhlanhla Mngadi and Andrew Curnow toward “the avant-gardist aesthetic of groups such as the Arts Ensemble of Chicago.” (SPAZA’s Bandcamp

There’s also music from the three-part, six hour documentary film Hemingway by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick with a soundtrack featuring Johnny Gandelsman from Brooklyn Rider, guitarist Gyan Riley, composer and pianist David Cieri, plus Shanir Blumenkrantz on bass and oud, and others. Then, listen to composer Kathryn Bostic deploy muted trumpet, violin, upright bass, and piano in her score for a documentary, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, about the life, works, and legacy of writer Toni Morrison.

Plus, hear Valgeir Sigurðsson’s score for a documentary about the exploitation of Iceland's natural resources - Draumalandið (“Dreamland”) and K. Leimer’s soundtrack Land of Look Behind, from a film about Jamaica and Bob Marley. - Caryn Havlik
